War on squirrels.

Postby JoJo on Tue Jul 01, 2008 12:02 pm

Hey, hey :teeth

I thought I'd see if anyone here can help my mum, who is a keen gardener. Her flower pots are always beautiful and are her pride and joy. Recently, however the next door neighbour has been leaving peanuts out for the squirrels and for some reason they have taken to burying them in our pots. I suppose the soil is nice and easy for them to dig in.

We've mentioned it to our neighbour, but now the little critters are in the habit of coming to our garden and digging about, they don't seem to want to stop anytime soon.
I was just wondering if any of you (or anyone you know) is aware of any humane way we could discourage these furry little diggers from destroying my mum's plants.
We're wary of using ultrasound rodent deterrants as they might upset our cat... :help

Haha I don't think she would mind so much if they were just digging up the lawn... :snigger
I suggested cutting some chicken wire into like a ring and laying it over the soil in the pots...it might work...

Wire might work, although the squirrels could probably find a way of moving the wire.

I feed the squirrels too. I have one little squirrel in particular who comes up to my patio door whilst I'm working and catches my attention. It's really cute.

Perhaps you could buy a dog to scare off the squirrels? :dunno

LOL... and the cats! LOL.. Wire sounds a good idea, or you could put one of those hanging basket things over the top and let the plant grow through it? I've heard that works with Cat mint, to stop the cats eating the plants down to the roots...?

good luck anyway.. hope your squirrels aren't too bright and you win..:D
